The hard shell of the egg, which is made up of calcium carbonate, gets dissolved. The egg is now enclosed by a thin outer semi - permeable membrane.3. Put this deshelled egg in pure water. After a few minutes the egg swells up. The swelling is due to the movement of water into the egg by osmosis from the external environment.
